William Lane Craig
From Exampleproblems
William Lane Craig (born August 23, 1949) is an American philosopher, theologian, and Christian apologist. He is a prolific author and lecturer on a wide range of issues related to the philosophy of religion, the historical Jesus, and the coherence of the Christian worldview.
Craig earned a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Birmingham and a doctorate in theology from the University of Munich. Following his doctoral studies, he was a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. He is currently a Research Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology in California.
Trained both as a professional philosopher (under John Hick) and a New Testament historian (under Wolfhart Pannenberg), Craig has vigorously defended Christian theism and the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus. In particular, he is well-known for reviving the Kalam cosmological argument for the existence of God.
Craig has authored or co-authored over thirty books and over a hundred articles in professional journals. [1] His book Reasonable Faith is regarded as a classic work in Christian apologetics by many evangelicals and apologists.
Craig is a frequent public speaker and debater on university campuses and occasionally appears in the national news media. He has engaged many prominent academic atheists and skeptical theologians in public dialogue. Some notable debates include:
- Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? Debate with John Dominic Crossan [2]
- Jesus' Resurrection: Fact or Figment? Debate with Gerd Ludemann [3]
- Does God exist? Debate with Antony Flew [4]
- God? Debate with Walter Sinnott-Armstrong [5]
Craig has been an outspoken critic of philosophical naturalism, skepticism, moral and philosophical relativism, liberal theology, and the Jesus Seminar. He has defended the middle knowledge view of divine providence and is also notable for his work in the philosophy of time. He is a founding member and has served as president of the Philosophy of Time Society. [6]
Craig is also a fellow of the Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture which is the hub of the intelligent design movement.
